This is Zoni.

It is soup which contains rice cakes (mochi), vegetables, and some kind of meat.

It is a New Year’s dish.

It is very different according to area or family.

In Kyoto usually the soup is based on white miso.

But in my family it is a clear soup made from chicken.

We put salmon roe, spinach, radish, carrot and kamaboko in it.

I love Zoni.

Osechi Ryori

In Japan people eat Osechi Ryori.

It is special dishes prepared for the New Year.

Usually it is contained in stacked boxes–it’s means to pile up happiness.

The Ingredients depend on the region.

But it usually contains stuff like this:

Black soy beans: Healthy

Herring roe: Children

Small baby fish: abundant harvest

Red and White Kamaboko:

Red: a charm against evil influence

White: pure

Shrimp: longevity

Kelp: Good luck

Mashed sweet potatoes with sweetened chestnuts: luck with money etc.

People make it at home or buy it somewhere.

I like mashed sweet potatoes with sweetened chestnuts.

It is called Kurikinton and I made it several times.

My sister made this one.

New Year

A Happy New Year !

In Japan the sexagenary cycle (Chinese calendar) is still followed.

It is called eto in Japanese.

A Long time ago it was used in China, to calculate seasons, time etc.

It has 12 types: mouse, cow, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, chicken, dog, and wild boar.

This year is the monkey year.

I hope for everyone to be happy!
